Chapter 13

“I had a dream about you last night,” she continued.

Was this really happening? Here? Now? She sure knew how to pick the most unexpected moments to catch me off guard.

“What was it about?” I asked, my voice weak.

As she pressed herself against my back, my body heated and relaxed in all the spots that seemed so wrong but that felt so right. Her arms encircled my belly, but her left thumb was dangerously close to my breast. If she’d wanted, she could have lifted it and grazed my nipple, already hardening under my bra.

“Wouldn’t you like to know?” she said. “Maybe I’ll tell you, and maybe I won’t. But just between us girls, it was part of what put me in such a good mood this morning.”

I let out a shaky breath, my brain unable to form words. I tried scrubbing the mug then accidentally dropped it into the water. I picked it up, and it slipped out of my shaky hands again. Apparently I’d reverted back to infancy and had lost all of my fine motor skills.

“You okay there?” Her sensual chuckle was about all I could take without turning to kiss her. “Here, let me take over. You sit.”

I reluctantly sat down at the kitchen table after she pulled away and began washing the dishes. What do you even say after something like that? If she was playing cat and mouse, she definitely had resumed the role of the feline. That was how I liked it. But I didn’t know how to react in this environment. Why couldn’t she have done that back at the hotel? Granted, I wasn’t washing dishes back at the hotel, but she could’ve found another opportunity. Damn it, how was I supposed to respond to this?

“Feeling better?” she playfully asked over her shoulder. “You looked a little unglued a minute ago.”

“Wasn’t that your goal?” I asked.

She shrugged as if nothing had happened. “I dunno. I didn’t really have a goal. I just saw you there and went with the moment.”

With a touch of bitterness, I asked, “Is the moment gone?”

“I dunno.” She actually turned and looked at me, her eyes smoldering. “You tell me.”

That was it. Completely eschewing all tact, I blurted out, “I want you.”

This time it was her turn to nearly drop a dish. The dimpled smile fell from her face, and in its place formed a smaller, more vulnerable smile. She resumed her washing, a lot steadier than I would have.

“How brave of you, Lei,” she said. “I kinda like it. But would you have admitted it without my putting the moves on first?”

An elderly gentleman walked into the kitchen, looking confused. The sweater tied around his shoulders was falling down. He looked startled to come across us and not Sandra.

“Oh!” he said. “I’m sorry. Is Mrs. Lunn about? I had a question for her.”

“She’s on the back porch,” I said, hoping I didn’t look as flustered as I felt.

As soon as I pointed him in the right direction, he hobbled out at a snail’s pace.
